Obama Family Attends Easter Service at St. John's

WASHINGTON - Dressed in their Easter Sunday best, President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters, Malia and Sasha, attended an Easter service today at St. John's Episcopal Church.

The first family made the short walk from the White House across Lafayette Park to St. John's, known as the "Church of the Presidents."

"Happy Easter everybody. Happy Easter," the president said to the press as he walked across the park. The president wore a grey suit while the first lady donned a light colored dress coat with a dark floral pattern over a light colored dress. Malia was in a black and white striped dress with a purple sweater, and Sasha wore a black and pink dress with a sweater.

When the president entered the church, many in the congregation stood and applauded him, with some calling out "Happy Easter" to the family.

The president heard a sermon by the Rev. Dr. Luis Leon, who told the congregation it is acceptable to have doubts about their faith, but it is important not to dwell in the past.

"When we dwell on the past, when we dwell on the 'if-onlys' of life, we forget that God addresses us in the now," Leon said.

The sermon turned slightly political when Leon said there are some members of the religious right who are trying to pull people back rather than letting them move forward.

"The captains of the religious right are always calling us back, back back. For blacks to be back in the back of the bus, for women to be back in the kitchen, for gays to be in the closet and for immigrants to be on their side of the border," Leon said. "What you and I understand is that when Jesus says you can't hang onto me, he says you know it's not about the past, it's not about the before, it's not about the way things were but about the way things can be in the now."

"Will you accept the invitation from our gospel today to see things with Easter vision, recognizing reality in a different and new and wonderful way?" he later added. "Today the choice is yours. Jesus Christ is risen today. That's the proclamation. May god bless you with Easter vision now and forever. Amen."

But it wasn't just a sermon about faith. The president also heard some smack talk about baseball when the reverend shared his views on the New York Yankees.

"I promised myself that I wouldn't say anything about baseball today, but I can't. ? The last time that I said that I hated the Yankees I got into a lot of trouble, so today I'm not going to say that I hate the Yankees, and it's hard to hate a team that is falling apart," Leon said as the congregation laughed. "A-Rod's [Alex Rodriguez] got a bummed knee. [Derek] Jeter's on the DL. [Mark] Teixeira's got a bad, a bad wrist, I think. [Curtis] Granderson can't run and their closer [pitcher Mariano Rivera] is about 55 years old, so I figure why bash on people while they're down."

Obama, the first lady and his daughters each took Holy Communion, and as they sat in their pew, they greeted congregants who were in the aisles for communion.

As the first family walked out of the church, a light sprinkle of rain fell, but the president chose not to take the short motorcade back to the White House, saying instead, "We're going to walk."

This marked the president's third visit to St. John's for an Easter service. The president and his family celebrated Easter at the Episcopalian church in 2009 and 2012.

In his weekly address, the president called for prayer and reflection over this Easter and Passover weekend.

"In the midst of all of our busy and noisy lives, these holy days afford us the precious opportunity to slow down and spend some quiet moments in prayer and reflection," Obama said.

"This weekend, I hope we're all able to take a moment to pause and reflect, to embrace our loved ones, to give thanks for our blessings, to rededicate ourselves to interests larger than our own," he said. "And to all the Christian families who are celebrating the Resurrection, Michelle and I wish you a blessed and joyful Easter."

On Monday, the president and first family plan to host hundreds of Americans at the White House for the annual Easter Egg Roll, and on Friday, the president is scheduled to participate in the Easter Prayer Breakfast at the White House.

Three killed, more than 20 hurt in 75-vehicle pileup

GALAX, Va. (AP) ? About 75 vehicles crashed Sunday along a mountainous, foggy stretch of interstate near the Virginia-North Carolina border, killing three people and injuring more than 20 others, police said.

Traffic backed up for about 8 miles in the southbound lanes of I-77 in southwest Virginia. Authorities closed the northbound lanes so fire trucks, ambulances and police could get to the wreck.

A series of crashes began around 1:15 p.m. Sunday in the area of Fancy Gap Mountain. There was heavy fog at the time and photos of the scene after the accident showed poor visibility.

"This mountain is notorious for fog banks. They have advance signs warning people. But the problem is, people are seeing well and suddenly they're in a fog bank," said Glen Sage of the American Red Cross office in Galax.

The Red Cross was setting up a shelter at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post for people stranded by the pileup.

Several vehicles caught fire in the wreck, but the blaze was put out, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

About 10 people were taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C., for mostly minor injuries, said Carol Porey, a supervisor there. The extent of the other injuries wasn't immediately clear.

Authorities did not know how long the interstate would be closed. Tow trucks worked to clear some of the wrecked cars and trucks.

Sage said school buses took about two dozen people to the shelter and more were expected. The site was set up to accommodate 100 people.

Relatives likely would pick up local residents brought to the shelter. People passing through might need to stay overnight, he said.

Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes.

PST: Sunderland sack manager Martin O'Neill

Two-and-half months without a win and meant Saturday?s inept performance cost Martin O?Neill his job. Just over one year after the former Leicester City, Celtic, and Aston Villa man replaced Steve Bruce at the Stadium of Light, the Northern Irishman is out, the club having relieved him of his responsibilities on Saturday night.

The announcement was made via the club?s website:

The club has parted company with manager Martin O?Neill.

Sunderland AFC has announced that it has parted company with manager Martin O?Neill this evening.

The club would like to place on record its thanks to Martin and wishes him well for the future.

An announcement will be made in the coming days regarding a successor.

The Black Cats hadn?t won a game since their 3-2 victory at Wigan on Jan. 19. In the eight matches that?ve followed, Sunderland collected five goals and three points while falling to 16th in the Premier League.

With 31 points, O?Neill team was only one point above the drop. Their 33 goals scored ranked 16th in the league, while only two teams (Queens Park Rangers, Reading) had won fewer games.

For a club with Sunderland?s resources, it?s an indefensible position to be in, especially consider O?Neill was given the power to reshape the team as he wished. The result was one of the most pedestrian brands of soccer in the league ? a squad that played like a caricature of pre-Premier League-era soccer. Conservative, cynical, and consistently disappointing, O?Neill?s product gave his employers no recourse.

His project wasn?t designed with long-term goals. The short-term results weren?t improving. The team wasn?t subject to any particular bad luck, and the manager wasn?t lacking for resources. There was no reason to keep O?Neill after a reputation-redefining spell.

With their Premier League survival at stake, Sunderland had to make a move. Even if they can?t find somebody with O?Neill?s CV, change for change?s sake will still be justified.

Look out squirrels: Leopards are new backyard wildlife

Friday, March 29, 2013

A new study led by WCS-India scientist Vidya Athreaya finds that certain landscapes of western India completely devoid of wilderness and with high human populations are crawling with a different kind of backyard wildlife: leopards.

The study found as many as five adult large carnivores, including leopards and striped hyenas, per 100 square kilometers (38 square miles), a density never before reported in a human-dominated landscape.

The study, called "Big Cats in Our Backyards," appeared in the March 6 edition of the journal PLoS One. Authors include: Vidya Athreya and Ullas Karanth of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Centre for Wildlife Studies in Bangalore; Morten Odden of Hedmark University College; John D. C. Linnell of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research; and Jagdish Krishnaswamy of Asoka Trust for Research of Ecology in the Environment.

Using camera traps, the authors founds that leopards often ranged close to houses at night though remained largely undetected by the public. Despite this close proximity between leopards and people, there are few instances of attacks in this region. The authors also photographed rusty spotted cat, small Indian civet, Indian fox, jungle cat, jackal, mongoose ? and a variety of people from the local communities. The research took place in western Maharashtra, India.

"Human attacks by leopards were rare despite a potentially volatile situation considering that the leopard has been involved in serious conflict, including human deaths in adjoining areas," said big cat expert Ullas Karanth of WCS. "The results of our work push the frontiers of our understanding of the adaptability of both humans and wildlife to each other's presence."

The authors say that the findings show that conservationists must look outside of protected areas for a more holistic approach to safeguarding wildlife in a variety of landscapes.

Healthy Brunch Tips: Avoid Mistakes During The Celebratory Morning Meal

As many of us celebrate Easter with a festive brunch, we may find ourselves staring down a monster buffet table. What should you grab? When is it okay to indulge and what constitutes a major diet setback? We asked our favorite nutrition experts to outline their absolute brunching don'ts as we head into the holiday.

What's your strategy for eating healthfully at brunch? Tell us in the comments!

1. Brunching In The First Place

"Honestly, the biggest mistake is going to brunches at all," says Ruth Frechman, M.A., R.D., C.P.T. "It?s calorie suicide. Typically, brunches are expensive. Most people want to get their money's worth. They could easily consume 4,000 calories in one meal. The average person only needs 2,000 calories for the entire day."

2. Choosing Sweet Over Savory

This is the central question of brunch: Do you go sweet or savory? Pancakes or eggs? Now we have an answer: savory (but not too salty!).

"My number one brunch don't would be dishes that are practically made of pure carbs like pancakes or waffles. Because these are digested so quickly they're guaranteed to make your blood sugar spike and then plummet," says Karen Ansel, R.D. "While you might feel fine for a while you're inevitably going to get that carb coma feeling a couple of hours later. Adding sugary maple syrup to these only adds insult to injury. Instead pick something that's more balanced with a combination of protein, complex carbs (preferably from whole grains) and some healthy fat like huevos rancheros with avocado."

3. Confusing Brunch and Breakfast

"One of the biggest mistakes people make, they do before they even get to brunch. And that's not eating anything at all," says Rachel Begun, M.S., R.D., registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "You need calories to burn calories, meaning you need to eat food to get the metabolism going. If you wait until late morning or early afternoon to eat something, your metabolism is sluggish and not operating at maximum capacity. Plus, going to brunch starving is a recipe for overeating."

Joy Dubost, Ph.D R.D. C.S.S.D. agrees: "We may think because we are combining two meals we can [eat more]," she says. "But if you are not careful on choices and portion-size, brunch can quickly exceed calories consumed in two separate meals."

Instead, try to have a healthful snack in the morning before you head out the door -- something that combines fiber and protein, like low-fat cheese with an apple or yogurt with berries and slivered almonds.

4. Ordering From The Drink Menu

Alcoholic brunch drinks like bloody marys and "adult" coffee drinks are an easy way to go overboard on the calories without even realizing it. "Consuming multiple beverages, particularly those that are higher in calories, can end up being a high calorie meal on its own," explains Dubost. "I would recommend keeping it to one 12-ounce beverage. For lighter options you may want to choose mimosas or wine spritzers."

5. Beware Customizable Options

We're looking at you, omelet bar. The egg base might be just fine, but add enough meats and cheeses and you've got a calorie bomb on your hands.

"Many dishes can be higher in calories because we load them with numerous ingredients," says Dubost. "Try to keep it more basic or include various flavorful vegetables."

6. Thinking About Calories, Fat ... But Not Sodium

Between the bloody mary mix, hollandaise sauce and hash browns, brunch can amount to a salt lick. And while you might choose egg whites for your omelet and salad on the side, it won't do much to lower the sodium of your meal. That means you can easily surpass the government's daily recommendation of 2,300 mg within a matter of bites.

EPA further limits sulfur. Will higher gas prices follow?

The Environmental Protection Agency announced new standards on sulfur in gasoline Friday that many say will lead eventually to a hike in gas prices. The EPA expects a 1 cent per gallon increase; industry says it will be much more.

By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / March 29, 2013

Gasoline drips off a nozzle during refueling at a gas station in Altadena, Calif. A new rule from the EPA would reduce the amount of sulfur allowed in gasoline from 30 parts per million to 10 parts per million in 2017.

Mario Anzuoni/Reuters/File

The federal government proposed new standards Friday that further limit the amount of sulfur in gasoline. Compared with previous reductions, Friday's proposal is slight. But many say it's enough to increase the price Americans pay at the pump.

Why It Matters

Energy: New regulations translate to a gradual increase in gas prices.

Environment: Less sulfur means lower pollution and reduced health costs associated with poor air quality.

"New requirements, new regulations are going to drive prices up," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, a gas price analysis website.?"This isn?t the biggest change but it will cost motorists."?

The jump could be as high as 9 cents in some places, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API), a trade association for the oil and gas industry.?

"Consumers care about the price of fuel, and our government should not be adding unnecessary regulations that raise manufacturing costs, especially when there are no proven environmental benefits," Bob Greco, director of?API's downstream group,?said in a statement Friday. "We should not pile on new regulations when existing regulations are working.? ?

UPS pays $40M to end online pharmacies probe

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Shipping company UPS has agreed to pay $40 million to end a federal criminal probe connected to its work for online pharmacies.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday that the Atlanta-based company would also "take steps" to block illicit online drug dealers from using their delivery service.

The DOJ says the fine amount is the money UPS collected from suspect online pharmacies.

UPS won't be charged with any crimes. Its biggest rival, FedEx Corp., has also been a target of the federal investigation.

The investigation of the two companies stems from a global campaign to shutter illicit online pharmacies launched in 2005. Since then, dozens of arrests have been made and thousands of websites closed worldwide as investigators continue to broaden the probe beyond the operators.

Aplia Econ Blog: News for Economics Students: How Much Does It ...

?Buyers know what goods cost.? Some version of that assumption comes up in the very first weeks of just
about every introductory econ course. It becomes one of the few assumptions that we make to build the model of consumer demand. But every once in a while, life gets in the way and asks ?Is that something you really can assume??

I had to test that assumption recently. I just moved and after unpacking, I was in the mood to make dessert for myself. Of course, I?hadn't?brought many kitchen supplies with me, so that quickly posed a problem. To make cookies, I needed to buy some wooden spoons, measuring cups, and a cooling rack. None of those are hard items to find, and I happened to live just minutes away from a shopping center that had a regional grocery store, a Wal-Mart, a Target, and a regional department store. I knew that all four stores should have what I want, so the question of where to go really came down to where it would cost the least. And that?s when I realized that one of the most basic assumptions of microeconomics?didn't?hold true. I?didn't?know which store would be the cheapest, or even what the prices of the goods should be!

I had some free time on a Saturday and a strong enough curiosity that I wanted to sample prices from each store. Here?s what I found:

STORE WOODEN SPOON
(Dollars per spoon)
COOLING RACK
(Dollars per rack)
MEASURING CUPS
(Dollars per cup)
GROCERY STORE $1.50 $4.50 $1.22
WAL-MART $2.97 $2.99 $1.32
TARGET $2.03 $3.67 $4.97
DEPARTMENT STORE $12.00 $7.00 $7.50

I was also shocked by the spread in prices. While I did expect to see some markup at higher-end stores, the range was wider than I expected. I was also surprised that there?wasn't?one store that had the cheapest prices, across-the-board, for all the goods.

When economists create models, the goal is to make a few assumptions about the world to describe the ?typical? human response and show how that response leads to a ?general? outcome. My behavior in this case is not what economists would call ?typical.? (My friends might even call it weird!) But even for the typical consumer, are the assumptions of the supply and demand model always appropriate?

In a lot of cases, the classic supply and demand model does gives accurate results, but sometimes the assumption that consumers know the distribution of prices?isn't?appropriate. In those cases, it?s important to understand how behavior will change if an assumption is violated. The classic model does not involve consumers looking for prices, they just know them. As economists, we often say we are assuming ?complete information.? When consumers don?t have complete information the market price typically?doesn't?match the equilibrium price the model predicts. Most of the time the market will be inefficient (contrary to what the model suggests) and both producer and consumer surplus will be lost.

Throughout economics, every conclusion that we draw from a model depends on the assumptions that are used to build that model. Whenever I learn about a new model, I always list the assumptions made and focus on how the results change if the assumption would be removed. Understanding the relationship between assumptions and results is the critical step to applying what we learn from theory and using it to understand what happens in the real world.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:?

1. When I was getting my information I found that stores rarely carry the exact same goods. (Even if they are the same brand, the packaging might be different. It?s why I calculated my information in per unit prices.) Since I was able to find the goods in multiple locations, but they were not identical, which market structure is the most appropriate to describe kitchen supplies: Monopoly, Oligopoly, Monopolistic Competition, or Perfect competition? Why?

2. While my shopping behavior was a bit different than most people for kitchen supplies, people do ?search? when they buy certain goods. Name some items where the supply and demand model?isn't?as appropriate as a consumer search model would be. Why is it more appropriate to think about consumers searching for these goods?

3. An important part of search theory talks about the cost of searching. Suppose I?didn't?live near a shopping center and the stores were all 20 minute drives apart. How do you think that distance (and the opportunity cost associated with traveling between them) would change my behavior when I search? How would it change the pricing behavior of the stores?

Glacial Legacy Set Stage for Washington Landslide

With a loud roar, a seaside cliff collapsed into the ocean yesterday on Washington's Whidbey Island, destroying a home and threatening some 30 more.

The 1,000-foot (300 meter) slide broke free about 4 a.m. local time, waking residents and sending one man fleeing from his house, which now sits on the beach. Damage occurred to a road leading to beachfront homes and power and utility lines, according to the Seattle Times.

January through March is landslide season in the Pacific Northwest, according to the Washington Department of Ecology, as heavy rains soak unstable sediments, provoking landslides. The shifty sediments are a legacy of glaciers scouring the region between 2 million and 10,000 years ago, leaving rubbly piles, sand and clay that haven't yet become rock. Steep sea cliffs prone to slides have formed as the land rebounds from the weight of the glacial ice, as well as further boosts from earthquakes.

Whidbey Island is long and narrow, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) from tip to tip, and many of its steep slopes are prone to slumping landslides, according to the Department of Ecology.

Slumps occur when groundwater concentrates near underground silt or clay layers. The saturated zone can let upper layers slide, sometimes with accompanying rotation. The soil moves as a giant block, with the clay acting as a slippery ramp.

About 18,000 years ago, glacial lakes laid down a thick, impenetrable clay layer on Whidbey Island, according to a geology field guide written by Terry Swanson, a geomorphologist at the University of Washington. Above the clay are fine-grained sediments and sands. The top layer is glacial till, the messy piles left behind as glaciers plow across a landscape.

Water seeping downward hits the clay and can't go any further, saturating the finer sediments above. This greatly increases the likelihood of landslides during excessively wet winters on Whidbey Island, the field guide said.

Oklahoma to allow horses to be slaughtered for meat

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Oklahoma took a step toward allowing livestock owners to slaughter horses for food on Friday when the governor signed a bill that permits the practice, but processing plants must first be authorized by the federal government.

Governor Mary Fallin's action legalized the slaughter of horses so that their meat may be prepared and packaged for export. But slaughterhouses must get U.S. Department of Agriculture authorization, Fallin said.

The slaughter of horses for food had been illegal in Oklahoma since 1963 and was carried out only in Texas and Illinois until Congress stopped it in 2006. The congressional ban was lifted in 2011.

Fallin said horse slaughterhouses in Oklahoma would use more humane practices than those in Mexico because they would be inspected by federal authorities.

Horsemeat was at the center of a scandal that erupted in Europe in January, when testing in Ireland revealed that some beef products also contained equine DNA.

The United States Humane Society and animal rights activists opposed the new law in Oklahoma, while livestock interests said the change preserves their private property rights and will benefit horse owners.

Wichita State moves on to final 8

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Malcolm Armstead and his Wichita State teammates told each other they could be a Final Four team last summer.

Now the Shockers are one win away from a place the program hasn't been since 1965.

They rolled past La Salle 72-58 in the West Regional semifinals on Thursday night. Next up is No. 2 seed Ohio State in Saturday's regional final.

"It's a big game and I am feeling another upset," reserve guard Nick Wiggins said. "We belong here."

Armstead scored 18 points, Carl Hall added 16 and freshman Ron Baker had 13 for the ninth-seeded Shockers in their latest win, proving their upset of No. 1 seed Gonzaga in the third round was no fluke.

"To see we're one game away from it, it's like a dream come true," Armstead said. "But you still have to stay focused on this next game. You can't bypass it and look forward to the Final Four yet."

Wichita State overwhelmed La Salle from the opening tip on its way to the school's first final eight appearance since 1981.

"It's like I'm in a dream still with this whole Elite Eight situation," Hall said.

The Shockers opened the game on a 14-2 run and ended the first half with a 9-1 spurt. They started the second half by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers for a 22-point lead.

La Salle never got closer than 11 points in the second half, when the Explorers outscored the Shockers 36-34.

"It took us a half to kind of adjust to the level they were playing at," La Salle coach John Giannini said. "The second half was pretty evenly played, but we were in just too deep of a hole."

Ninth-seeded Wichita State (29-8) tied the school's 2010-11 team for most victories. That group won the NIT title. These Shockers want much more.

"We need one more win to seal this deal and go back home and get ready for the Final Four," Baker said. "We're just going to grab this opportunity the best we can."

The Shockers beat Kansas by two points to get to the final eight in 1981. They didn't need to take down a giant this time, just a 6,500-student school from Philadelphia that scrapped its way 2,754 miles from an at-large berth in Dayton, Ohio, to Los Angeles.

"That was the game plan early on, try to wear them down, pound it inside, and get inside-out shots, and that's what we came up," Armstead said.

Jerrell Wright and Tyrone Garland led the Explorers with 16 points each. Ramon Galloway, who averages a team-leading 17.4 points, was held to 11 for a program that won the 1954 NCAA championship and reached the 1955 national title game.

La Salle (24-10) didn't have the depth to hold its own against Wichita State, which owned a 47-29 rebounding edge and outscored the Explorers 40-26 in the paint, helped by Hall, who had 14 points in the first half.

"It was kind of an easy night for us on the inside because they only really have one post player," Hall said.

The Shockers limited La Salle to 36 percent shooting ? the same as Gonzaga shot in its third-round loss.

"They were all over the place. They came to play," Galloway said.

Hall sat down with his third foul while La Salle was busy whittling its deficit to 11 points by attacking the rim. But the Explorers never got within single digits, and Armstead scored nine straight points to push Wichita State's lead to 62-47. Another 6-0 spurt, capped by Cleanthony Early's dunk, made it 68-48.

"Armstead was huge at that point," Giannini said. "He had three, four big buckets in a row and we were scoring. But if we get the stops, that 10, 11, 12-point game is a four- to eight-point game, and then you really have a chance. But Armstead wouldn't allow it. When we threatened, he was the one that really responded."

The Shockers hit two straight 3-pointers to open the second half and push their lead to 22 points.

La Salle turned aggressive, answering with a 10-0 run to close to 44-32, with Wright scoring the first seven points and Galloway making a 3-pointer.

The Explorers got shocked to start the game, with Wichita State outscoring them 14-2. The Shockers ended the half on a 9-1 run, including five by Baker, to lead 38-22 at the break. La Salle was held to 27 percent shooting, while Wichita State shot 53 percent and dominated the paint 24-10.

Hall's teammates repeatedly found him down on the block and he muscled in layups over the smaller Explorers.

Galloway missed his first six shots. He finally made a 3-pointer that drew the Explorers within eight, but Wichita State quickly restored its lead to double digits.

Although 6-foot-11 center Steve Zack was cleared to play, he didn't and the Explorers missed his added height and inside presence. Zack had been out the previous six games with a sprained foot.

"He had a lot of soreness today, and we didn't think he could move well enough to help us in the game," Giannini said.

Stem cell fate depends on 'grip'

Mar. 28, 2013 ? The field of regenerative medicine holds great promise, propelled by greater understanding of how stem cells differentiate themselves into many of the body's different cell types. But clinical applications in the field have been slow to materialize, partially owing to difficulties in replicating the conditions these cells naturally experience.

A team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has generated new insight on how a stem cell's environment influences what type of cell a stem cell will become. They have shown that whether human mesenchymal stem cells turn into fat or bone cells depends partially on how well they can "grip" the material they are growing in.

The research was conducted by graduate student Sudhir Khetan and associate professor Jason Burdick, along with professor Christopher Chen, all of the School of Engineering and Applied Science's Department of Bioengineering. Others involved in the study include Murat Guvendiren, Wesley Legant and Daniel Cohen.

Their study was published in the journal Nature Materials.

Much research has been done on how stem cells grow on two-dimensional substrates, but comparatively little work has been done in three dimensions. Three-dimensional environments, or matrices, for stems cells have mostly been treated as simple scaffolding, rather than as a signal that influences the cells' development.

Burdick and his colleagues were interested in how these three-dimensional matrices impact mechanotransduction, which is how the cell takes information about its physical environment and translates that to chemical signaling.

"We're trying to understand how material signals can dictate stem cell response," Burdick said. "Rather than considering the material as an inert structure, it's really guiding stem cell fate and differentiation -- what kind of cells they will turn into."

The mesenchymal stem cells the researchers studied are found in bone marrow and can develop into several cell types: osteoblasts, which are found in bone; chondrocytes, which are found in cartilage; and adipocytes, which are found in fat.

The researchers cultured them in water-swollen polymer networks known as hydrogels, which share some similarities with the environments stem cells naturally grow in. These materials are generally soft and flexible -- contact lenses, for example, are a type of hydrogel -- but can vary in density and stiffness depending on the type and quantity of the bonds between the polymers. In this case, the researchers used covalently cross-linked gels, which contain irreversible chemical bonds.

When seeded on top of two-dimensional covalently cross-linked gels, mesenchymal stem cells spread and pulled on the material differently depending on how stiff it was. Critically, the mechanics guide cell fate, or the type of cells they differentiate it into. A softer environment would produce more fat-like cells and a stiffer environment, where the cells can pull on the gel harder, would produce more bone-like cells.

However, when the researchers put mesenchymal stem cells inside three-dimensional hydrogels of varying stiffness, they didn't see these kinds of changes.

"In most covalently cross-linked gels, the cells can't spread into the matrix because they can't degrade the bonds -- they all become fat cells," Burdick said. "That tells us that in 3D covalent gels the cells don't translate the mechanical information the same way they do in a 2D system."

To test this, the researchers changed the chemistry of their hydrogels so that the polymer chains were connected by a peptide that the cells could naturally degrade. They hypothesized that, as the cells spread, they would be able to get a better grip on their surrounding environment and thus be more likely to turn into bone-like cells.

In order to determine how well the cells were pulling on their environment, the researchers used a technique developed by Chen's lab called 3D traction force microscopy. This technique involves seeding the gel with microscopic beads, then tracking their location before and after a cell is removed.

"Because the gel is elastic and will relax back into its original position when you remove the cells," Chen said, "you can quantify how much the cells are pulling on the gel based on how much and which way it springs back after the cell is removed."

The results showed that the stem cells' differentiation into bone-like cells was aided by their ability to better anchor themselves into the growth environment.

"With our original experiment, we observed that the cells essentially didn't pull on the gel. They adhered to it and were viable, but we did not see bead displacement. They couldn't get a grip," Burdick said. "When we put the cells into a gel where they could degrade the bonds, we saw them spread into the matrix and deform it, displacing the beads."

As an additional test, the researchers synthesized another hydrogel. This one had the same covalent bonds that the stem cells could naturally degrade and spread through but also another type of bond that could form when exposed to light. They let the stem cells spread as before, but at the point the cells would begin to differentiate -- about a week after they were first encapsulated -- the researchers further "set" the gel by exposing it to light, forming new bonds the cells couldn't degrade.

"When we introduced these cross-links so they could no longer degrade the matrix, we saw an increase toward fat-like cells, even after letting them spread," Burdick said. "This further supports the idea that continuous degradation is needed for the cells to sense the material properties of their environment and transduce that into differentiation signals."

Burdick and his colleagues see these results as helping develop a better fundamental understanding of how to engineer tissues using stem cells.

"This is a model system for showing how the microenvironment can influence the fate of the cells," Burdick said.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Kenyans await ruling in disputed presidential race

By Edmund Blair

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's Supreme Court rules on Saturday on a challenge to Uhuru Kenyatta's presidential election win, a judgment seen as a test of the democratic system five years after another disputed vote triggered tribal bloodshed.

The country's outgoing president called for calm ahead of the decision that will either confirm the victory of Kenya's richest man Kenyatta or force another vote.

Defeated candidate Raila Odinga says the March 4 poll was marred by technical problems and widespread rigging. Both politicians have promised to abide by the court's final word.

Many ordinary Kenyans insist they will not allow a repeat of the anarchy that killed more than 1,200 people and hammered the economy following a dispute over the last election in 2007.

"We have moved on," said Monica Njagi, 28, owner of an Internet cafe in the port city of Mombasa. "Whatever the ruling, we shall go by it ... We have enough useful lessons from our past."

Peaceful voting this time round, and the fact that the dispute is being played out by lawyers not machete-wielding gangs, has already helped repair the image of east Africa's largest economy.

Saturday's ruling will test whether Kenyans trust their reformed judiciary and whether supporters of rival candidates will accept the result quietly in a nation where tribal loyalties largely determine political allegiances.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has yet to set a time on Saturday that he and his panel of judges will issue a verdict. Comments at a brief hearing on Friday suggested it might not come till later on Saturday.

"As the country awaits the Supreme Court ruling which is due this Easter weekend, I call upon all of us to accept the ruling and maintain peace," outgoing President Mwai Kibaki said in a message to mark the Christian Easter holiday.

"ESSENTIAL CONTACTS"

Western donors are watching the fate of a trade partner and a country they see as vital to regional stability. But they also face a headache if Kenyatta wins, because he is facing charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court.

Kenyatta is accused of helping incite the violence after the 2007 vote but has denied the charges and promised to cooperate to clear his name.

Western nations have a policy of having only "essential contacts" with indictees of the court. They say that will not affect dealings with the government as a whole. But they still face a delicate balancing act to avoid driving a long-time ally of the West closer to emerging powers such as China.

Neighboring African states are also keeping a careful eye on the proceedings after they were hit by the knock-on effects when vital trade routes through Kenya were shut down five years ago.

Kenyatta comfortably beat Odinga in terms of votes won, 50.07 percent versus 43.28 percent, but only narrowly avoided a run-off after winning just 8,100 votes more than the 50 percent needed to be declared the winner outright.

In the Supreme Court's hearing on Friday, the legal teams reviewed results of recounts ordered in 22 of the 33,400 polling stations after Odinga said more votes were cast than registered voters. Both sides said the recounts supported their arguments.

Odinga's team argued that the failure of technology in tallying undermined the vote. Rival lawyers said any irregularities or technical hiccups had an insignificant impact and did not change the overall outcome.

International observers said voting itself was credible, but diplomats say observers did not watch the full five-day count.

Pennsylvania Launches Adoption Mobile Web site | GantDaily.com

HARRISBURG ? Pennsylvania has launched one of the nation?s first adoption mobile Web sites, providing easier access for those looking to adopt one of the nearly 2,500 children waiting for a permanent home.

Thirty-eight percent of all visits to Pennsylvania?s Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) Web site, adoptpakids.org, come from mobile devices. With the new mobile site, potential adoptive families who visit adoptpakids.org on their smartphone will automatically be directed to the new mobile site.

?People are no longer limited to using their personal desktop computers anymore; instead, they are using their smartphones and tablets to access information,? Department of Public Welfare Acting Secretary Bev Mackereth said. ?Finding a loving and caring home for children who have a goal of permanency can be a long process, and by creating the adoption mobile website we are making it easier for potential families to view children who deserve a forever home.?

Accessing the adoption Web site from anywhere anytime provides convenience to both potential families and case workers. It offers search capabilities for viewing updated and newly added adoption profiles, a photo album of children waiting to be adopted, and information on post-permanency services and how to become a foster or adoptive parent.

SWAN is a broad-based cooperative effort and centralized information and facilitation service funded and overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. The network includes county children and youth agencies; juvenile court judges; foster and adoptive parents; private adoption agencies; the Pennsylvania Adoption Exchange; and many others working together on behalf of children who need permanent homes.

The SWAN program serves children in the custody of county children and youth agencies and supports their efforts in expediting permanency services.

For more information on SWAN visit www.adoptpakids.org, call 1-800-585-SWAN (7926) or ?like? SWAN on Facebook.

'What Would Ryan Lochte Do?' We can't really tell

E!

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

"What Would Ryan Lochte Do?" is the title of E!'s new docu-series about the oddball Olympic swimmer -- and a question no sane person should adopt as a personal motto.

"I want everyone to be in my shoes," says the self-proclaimed fashion icon, displaying a pair of his famous electric green high-tops, in an extended preview for the show. Is he speaking metaphorically or just advertising his brand?

Some other revelations from "Lochtenation":

  • "You really have to put the emphasis on the 'J'": A pronunciation guide to his never-caught-on catchphrase "Jeah."
  • "I don't even remember what I got at the Olympics": His confusion about how many medals he won at the London Games.
  • "Describe player": The 28-year-old bachelor's response when asked about his reputation as a ladies' man, and followed by shots of his many bar conquests.
  • "I won't give up on love": His explanation for his, um, dedication to "dating."
  • "Don't duplicate. Just recipitate": ???

"What Would Ryan Lochte Do?" premieres April 21 on E!.

IAG increases its offer for Vueling | Buying Business Travel

British Airways? owner IAG has increased its offer for Spanish carrier Vueling by 32 per cent.

IAG made a ?113 million bid for Vueling in November but the airline?s board recommended that the bid should be rejected for being too low.

IAG, which already has a 45.85 per cent shareholding in Vueling, has today (March 27) increased its offer from ?7 per share to ?9.25 per share. Trading of shares in Vueling were earlier suspended in Spain.

The company said it would also now change the minimum acceptance level from the previous terms of 90 per cent of Vueling?s other shareholders to just 4.16 per cent of all shareholders, which would give IAG a controlling stake of 50.01 per cent.

If the intended purchase, which is being made through IAG?s investment vehicle Veloz Holdo, goes ahead, IAG plans to continue running Vueling as a separate brand and will not integrate it into Iberia.

Earlier today, IAG announced that Iberia's chief executive Rafael Sanchez-Lozano has left the airline.

TV comedies "Girls," "Louie" headline Peabody Awards

(Reuters) - Irreverent U.S. cable television series "Girls" and "Louie" on Wednesday headlined the winners of the annual Peabody Awards, the oldest and one of the top honors in broadcasting.

The awards recognize excellence in television and radio broadcasting, as well as by webcasters, producing organizations and individuals.

HBO's "Girls," which has earned creator and star Lena Dunham, 26, two Golden Globe awards and a slew of Emmy nominations, was lauded by the Peabody panel for its "singular, decidedly unglamorous take on sex and the single girl."

Comedian Louis C.K.'s "Louie," a cult hit on FX of unconnected story lines and vignettes about a single father in the entertainment business, was praised as a "milestone of comedic reach and candor."

The Peabody panel, which also honors international and local programs, awarded a prize to WVIT-TV, an NBC affiliate in West Hartford, Connecticut, for its coverage of the elementary school mass shootings in December in nearby Newtown.

Other notable winners include British broadcaster ITV's documentary on the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile that explored allegations of decades-long sexual abuse by the once beloved star.

The BBC science-fiction drama "Doctor Who" won an Institutional Peabody Award for its ability to evolve with the times over its some 50 years in production.

Producer Lorne Michaels, the driving force behind NBC sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live," won an individual Peabody Award for career achievement.

The website SCOTUSblog.com, which provides analysis and archival material on the U.S. Supreme Court, also won an award and was praised as a one-stop shop for information on the court.

A 16-member board of critics, experts, and news and entertainment industry insiders select the winners of the annual awards handed out by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The winners will be honored at a ceremony in New York on May 20.

HBT: Jeter backing off, trying to eliminate pain

By backdating his season-opening stint on the disabled list Derek Jeter is eligible to play for the Yankees on April 6, but it sounds like that has little chance of happening.

Jeter last played in a minor-league game Saturday, serving as a designated hitter, and general manager Brian Cashman told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com that he won?t play in another game until next week at the earliest.

?We?re just trying to back off and eliminate the pain,? Cashman said. ?We?ll back off completely. He won?t be doing anything; he won?t be playing any games here for the next few days.?

That obviously doesn?t sound like the plan for someone who?ll be ready for play regular season games by April 6, so the Yankees are looking at Eduardo Nunez as their starting shortstop for a while.

Kanye West: Is 'I Am God' his next album title?

Kanye West was reported to be considering 'I Am God' as the title for his new album, but is that really the artist's plan? Some sources say the phrase 'I Am A God' is actually the title of one of Kanye West's new songs.

Kanye West performs at the BET Awards. One report said the artist was considering titling his next album 'I Am God,' but others say that's not true.

No, he is not, according to an anonymous source that spoke to E! News. In addition, someone that the Huffington Post cited as ?a reliable source in West's camp? said that the phrase is actually the name of one of West?s songs on his upcoming album, not the title, which is where the misunderstanding may have arisen. The title, added the source, is ?I Am A God,? not ?I Am God.?

?We would never be so presumptuous or sacrilegious to call ourselves the supreme being,? the source said, according to the Huffington Post. (Your guess is as good as ours as to what that ?we? indicates.) The source said the album title hasn?t been decided on yet.

The impression that West was titling his album ?I Am God? may have come from a BBC News article which was discussing the possibility that West and Kim Kardashian are considering the name North for their child.

?Mixed emotions greet reports that Kanye West is considering calling his first child North,? the article by Charles Nevin read. ?It's a good joke, from a slightly unexpected source (neither the rapper nor his possibly even more famous partner, Kim Kardashian, are best known for their self-deprecating sallies, although the title Kanye is supposed to be contemplating for his new album, I Am God, is said to be ?half tongue-in-cheek?).?

West first worked as a producer in the music industry and was a member of the rap group the Go-Getters, which released one album, before he crafted his first album, ?The College Dropout,? and released it in 2004. ?College? was followed by his albums ?Graduation,? ?My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,? and his collaboration with artist Jay-Z titled ?Watch the Throne,? among other works. He has won 21 Grammy Awards throughout his career.

Mostly not adoption-related: family/baby shower rant

You need to take a huge step back.

You don't need to be this supportive. You don't need to store stuff for them. You don't need to give them any baby-related advice, or try and bond over kid stuff. You don't need to even throw her a shower.

I think you're trying to treat them the way that you expect the average person to be treated in the average situation, but they've taken advantage of you way too long,

I agree, limit the guest list and tell them that's all you can afford and handle in your apt. If someone else I their lives wants a different kind of shower, more power to them.

Then I would back away. Yes, you're getting a nephew, but I would limit my contact with such toxic life-suckers.

Sun block for the 'Big Dog': Astronomers detect titanium oxide and titanium dioxide around the giant star VY Canis Majoris

Mar. 27, 2013 ? An international team of astronomers, including researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and from the University of Cologne, successfully identified two titanium oxides in the extended atmosphere around a giant star. The object VY Canis Major is one of the largest stars in the known universe and close to the end of its life. The detection was made using telescope arrays in the USA and in France.

The discovery was made in the course of a study of a spectacular star, VY Canis Majoris or VY CMa for short, which is a variable star located in the constellation Canis Major (Greater Dog). "VY CMa is not an ordinary star, it is one of the largest stars known, and it is close the end of its life," says Tomasz Kami?ski from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR). In fact, with a size of about one to two thousand times that of the Sun, it could extend out to the orbit of Saturn if it were placed in the centre of our Solar System.

The star ejects large quantities of material which forms a dusty nebula. It becomes visible because of the small dust particles that form around it which reflect light from the central star. The complexity of this nebula has been puzzling astronomers for decades. It has been formed as a result of stellar wind, but it is not understood well why it is so far from having a spherical shape.

Neither is known what physical process blows the wind, i.e. what lifts the material up from the stellar surface and makes it expand. "The fate of VY CMa is to explode as a supernova, but it is not known exactly when it will happen," adds Karl Menten, head of the "Millimetre and Submillimetre Astronomy" Department at MPIfR.

Observations at different wavelengths provide different pieces of information which is characteristic for atomic and molecular gas and from which physical properties of an astronomical object can be derived. Each molecule has a characteristic set of lines, something like a 'bar code', that allows to identify what molecules exist in the nebula.

"Emission at short radio wavelengths, in so-called submillimetre waves, is particularly useful for such studies of molecules," says Sandra Br?nken from the University of Cologne. "The identification of molecules is easier and usually a larger abundance of molecules can be observed than at other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum."

The research team observed TiO and TiO2 for the first time at radio wavelengths. In fact, titanium dioxide has been seen in space unambiguously for the first time. It is known from every-day life as the main component of the commercially most important white pigment (known by painters as "titanium white") or as an ingredient in sunscreens. It is also quite possible that the reader consumed some amounts of it as it is used to colour food (coded as E171 in the labels).

However, stars, especially the coolest of them, are expected to eject large quantities of titanium oxides, which, according to theory, form at relatively high temperatures close to the star. "They tend to cluster together to form dust particles visible in the optical or in the infrared," says Nimesh Patel from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "And the catalytic properties of TiO2 may influence the chemical processes taking place on these dust particles, which are very important for forming larger molecules in space," adds Holger M?ller from the University of Cologne.

Absorption features of TiO have been known from spectra in the visible region for more than a hundred years. In fact, these features are used in part to classify some types of stars with low surface temperatures (M- and S-type stars). The pulsation of Mira stars, one specific class of variable stars, is thought to be caused by titanium oxide. Mira stars, supergiant variable stars in a late stage of their evolution, are named after their prototype star "Mira" (the wonderful) in the constellation of Cetus (the 'sea monster' or the 'whale').

The observations of TiO and TiO2 show that the two molecules are easily formed around VY CMa at a location that is more or less as predicted by theory. It seems, however, that some portion of those molecules avoid forming dust and are observable as gas phase species. Another possibility is that the dust is destroyed in the nebula and releases fresh TiO molecules back to the gas. The latter scenario is quite likely as parts of the wind in VY CMa seem to collide with each other.

The new detections at submillimetre wavelengths are particularly important because they allow studying the process of dust formation. Also, at optical wavelengths, the radiation emitted by the molecules is scattered by dust present in the extended nebula which blurs the picture, while this effect is negligible at radio wavelengths allowing for more precise measurements.

The discoveries of TiO and TiO2 in the spectrum of VY CMa have been made with the Submillimetre Array (SMA), a radio interferometer located at Hawaii, USA. Because the instrument combines eight antennas which worked together as one big telescope 226-meters in size, astronomers were able to make observations at unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. A confirmation of the new detections was successively made later with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) located in the French Alps.
